MFL Curriculum Intent
At Grainville school, our students will develop a curiosity and love for foreign languages.
The study of languages will allow students to appreciate the diversity, customs and traditions of other cultures. This will promote the fundamental values of tolerance and respect and help our students to see their place as a global citizen.
The curriculum is sequenced to ensure grammar and topics are regularly revisited to maintain breadth and increase depth in language learning. This will enable students to understand and communicate effectively with someone from a different linguistic background.
Students will complete a range of assessments focusing on the main skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Mastering a foreign language will allow students to learn more about their own first languages and be able to effectively convey their ideas to others.
Students will develop confidence in problem solving, analysis, creativity and critical thinking which will provide students with the tools necessary to succeed in a global workplace.
Key Information
Students will study French at Key Stage 3 and then are given the choice to study French, Spanish or Italian at GCSE. Students will have taster sessions in Italian and Spanish during Key Stage 3 to help inform their choices.
Students are able to participate in a day trip to St Malo in Year 8 and there is also a Jèrriais Club run by the Jèrriais Teaching Service offering Key Stage 3 students the opportunity to develop their knowledge of Jersey’s local language.
