Tuesday night saw the first annual inter-school debate between Grainville and Haute Vallee held at Haute Vallee school.
As part of our work as partnership schools we have developed a literacy strategy that has a focus on speaking and listening and students worked on class debates last term, culminating in year group competitions.
Teams were selected from Year 7 and 8 and they took part in their debates last night.
Our Year 7 team of Andy, Hannah and Daisy won their debate as the negative team in the debate: ‘Technology isolates rather than unites.’ Huge congratulations to them!
The Year 8 team of Tyler, Ryan and Mara narrowly lost out in the debate ‘Words are more powerful than actions’. All students spoke clearly and presented their arguments well. Mara was judged as the best speaker for the Year 8 debate, well done Mara!
All students were fantastic and were credits to the school.
Deputy Tracey Vallois (Education Minister and one of the judges), commented on how impressed she was by the quality of speeches and rebuttals from such young students.
The Year 9 debate has been postponed until 31st January (3.30pm at Grainville school) so the outcome of that debate will determine the overall winner…and therefore who will claims the trophy!
