Which years you were at Grainville school?
2005 – 2010
What was your biggest challenge at school?
The move from primary into secondary school. I remember feeling quite nervous at the time as only a couple of people moved to Grainville from my primary school, but the induction days and activities we completed in the first week soon got rid of that.
What was your greatest achievement at school?
I’d say getting an A* in my history GCSE and winning an award for achievement in history. I studied particularly hard for the final exams and was proud to achieve that grade.
Favourite lesson/activity?
I had a few – I enjoyed business studies, history and science.
Which aspects of Grainville School helped you become the person you are today?
The teachers I had, they instilled a passion for learning and development and influenced me to always try my best. This is something I maintain to this day, and it has helped me in my career with things like ongoing professional development.
Favourite memory of Grainville school?
I have so many great memories and when I meet up with my friends, we often reminisce about what we got up to! My favourite was probably the Dorset trip we went on toward the end of year 11. My closest friends also went on the trip, and we did lots of activities including sailing and mountain biking. It was a really nice way to close off our time at the school before everyone started moving onto A-Levels or apprenticeships and work.
What path did you take and who inspired you along the way to get to where you are today?
After Grainville, I completed my A-Levels at Hautlieu. Once I’d finished my A-Levels I was unsure on what to do next, get a degree or go into work. I ultimately went through the university application process and did apply to some, but I race motorcycles as a hobby and wasn’t too keen on giving that up whilst studying in the UK.
A year prior to this University College Jersey started offering a business and management degree (which is what I applied to the UK universities for), and I decided to go for this as it would allow me to achieve a degree on island. This turned out to be a great option for me as I could continue with my racing, get a full honours degree and combine my studies with real experience as a work placement was offered as part of the degree.
One of the modules on the degree touched on project management and business analysis, which interested me, but I had no idea about career options in this area. I had a chat with one of my tutors and advised me to contact a local management consultancy, who then kindly offered me to spend a few weeks with them finding out what management consultants do. This turned into an internship once I’d finished my degree, and I was offered a job at the end, which I accepted. I had the opportunity to work with many great people and clients during this time, which helped me develop my consultancy skill set.
Favourite aspects of your job?
I love the variety, I’m lucky that I get to work across different industries and with people from different backgrounds. Each time we kick off a project its like starting a new job!
What advice would you give to students looking at their career options?
The first is to get some form of work experience as not only will it help you develop important skills, but it can also help you figure out what you do and don’t like.
The second is that if you’re interested in a particular career, reach out to people in that industry to ask any questions you may have and learn more about their role. This may seem daunting but in my experience most people/companies are happy to help. Without reaching out and asking for advice, I may not have landed my first role after graduating.
