Y8 students from Grainville School have become the first secondary school pupils to complete an educational visit to the world-renowned Eric Young Orchid Foundation . The two groups of students were chosen for their excellent engagement in science and were given the opportunity to extend their learning about plant biology and adaptations beyond their classroom studies.
The visit comprised a “walk and talk” through the orchid biome, where different orchids are displayed in a natural tropical setting, followed by a tour of the behind-the-scenes areas. In one activity, students were each given their own orchid flower to simulate the pollination process that is completed in the wild by pollinators such as bees. Finally, students were able to ask the staff their own questions about these amazing plants.
As well as marvelling at the beauty of the orchids, students were able to gain an understanding of the survival tricks these plants have evolved. What students found most surprising was the diversity of scents produced by the plants, from vanilla and apple to the less appealing rotting flesh!
Students completed a survey after the visit and rated their experience very highly. They specifically enjoyed being in a new learning environment, interacting with an expert plant biologist and taking part in practical learning tasks.
Thank you to the staff at the Eric Young Orchid Foundation for hosting us and we look forward to our next visit!
