Year 9 Curriculum

Art

TermCurriculum
Autumn
During this term and half of the spring term students will study Contemporary typography, Pop Art & Graffitti Art. Students will develop their skills in media such as collage, watercolour, tone and oil pastel.

Students will learn how complete a more in-depth artist research in line with GCSE expectations. They will complete presentations and collaborate in small groups to create a display poster researching various Pop Artists.
SpringStudents will continue with their contemporary typography project and develop a final piece based around Pop culture of today eg. food wrappers. Students will complete a Pop art inspired junk food text pieces and crisp packet and junk food observational studies looking to then develop these into a paper-based 3D sculpture in preparation for GCSE.
SummerDuring this term, students will study Landscape painting, 1 and 2 point perspective and the work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

Students will then develop their skills in painting and colour theory further to create a final outcome inspired by a local landscape in the style of Hundertwasser.

Students will learn how to complete a more in-depth artist research in line with GCSE expectations. They will complete presentations and collaborate in small groups to create display posters researching various artist whose work is based upon the theme of landscapes.

Design Technology

Food StudiesIn Yr9, students will learn to cook a range of sweet and savoury dishes, focussing on the importance of preservation, food safety and hygiene. Students will be encouraged to consider how to ensure a safe product is produced. Finally, students will explore the areas of food provenance and sustainability, followed by an ‘East Meets West’ investigation and preparation of dishes from around the world.
Design Technology• In preparation for KS4, students are given a taste of a GCSE NEA type assignment to design and make a modular desktop organiser consisting of a light, stationery holder and two other components of their own choice.
• To complete this work successfully students must take into account the views of their client before they move onto generating and developing and modelling their own ideas.
• After making their desktop organiser they must then complete the project by testing and evaluating their final product and assessing its suitability in terms of meeting the needs of their client.

Drama

Autumn TermPhysical TheatreStudents begin to explore the style of Physical theatre looking specifically at Frantic Assembly, devising and scripting a performance
Spring TermScripted performanceStudents begin exploration of 'text in performance' learning how to bring a script from 'page to stage' using a variety of performance strategies and techniques.
Summer TermPerforming to an audienceStudents create their own piece of theatre based on stimulus, using the performance techniques, and theatrical styles they have explored and developed this year.

ICT

TermCourse
Autumn TermThe Digital World

In this unit, students will get an opportunity to learn more about the digital world and the effect this has on their lives. We will explore how our data is stored online and how this is used by companies including social media companies. We will also look at Hacking and Malware and discuss the different threats. Students will then have an opportunity to understand how to mitigate these threats



Gotcha Database

In this unit, students will gain an understanding of databases and why and where they are used. Students will get an opportunity to use databases in Access and then set up their own. They will gain an understanding of data types and validation as well as searching and sorting databases.
Spring TermHTML

Students use notepad to create web pages in HTML. They are given the opportunity to develop their understanding of the HTML code and CSS and develop simple web pages on a topic of their choice

Spreadsheet

In this unit students develop their understanding of Excel and learn how to use a range of different formulas and functions. They will then be set a task to create a dashboard incorporating these skills.
Summer TermPython revisited

In this unit, students get the opportunity to revisit Python and further develop their skills. This unit will allow them to use python to complete a range of tasks including calculations, making predictions and giving responses to questions.
iDea - The Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award

This is an international programme that helps students develop digital, enterprise and employability skills.

As an extension to each of the units studied, students will get the opportunity to work through a series of online challenges. Through the completion of the topics, the students will then win badges, on a range of different topics. When students have completed a number of the badges, they will become eligible for certificate which are awarded at Bronze, Silver and Gold level and are sent through from Buckingham Palace.

YEAR 9 (KS3 CONSOLIDATION AND PRE-GCSE FOUNDATION PROGRAMME)
The autumn term of Y9 is spent consolidating key knowledge and skills from the KS3 curriculum for biology, chemistry and physics. By Christmas, students will have started to think about their science choices for GCSE and from January students will be put into new groups that focus on the topics that will be most relevant to their own learning.
