Food | In Yr7, students will improve their knowledge and understanding of what constitutes a healthy, balanced diet. They will be introduced to basic food skills to improve their confidence in food preparation. Students will cook a range of basic dishes, sweet and savoury. |
Design Technology | • Health and safety must always be our first priority. From the outset we teach students about the potential hazards of being in a workshop environment and we give them an opportunity to develop competency with regard to the use of tools, machinery, and equipment. • Students have the chance to work with wood, plastic, and metal through a series of mini-projects. • Students are also taught a range of drawing skills/techniques and are given the chance to demonstrate and develop their teamwork and presentation skills through a structures based team challenge. |

Autumn Term | Digital Literacy : Digital Literacy is necessary to become a digital citizen, so students are taught elements of eSafety, email etiquette and other digital skills. They are then given the opportunity to discuss these issues in lessons. Coding with Micro:bits: The micro:bit is a small programmable computer which students use to code simple programs onto. The students begin by coding with blocks and then when confident progress onto programming in Python. |
Spring Term | Computer Hardware: Students will learn the distinction between Hardware and Software and given the opportunity to look inside the computer to identify the different components. They will also gain an understanding of how a computer works. Virtual Pet: Students work in Scratch to develop software specific skills; they then develop a game where they create a Virtual Pet. Once complete students then use the skills learnt to develop their own game. The students learn about variables and functions and use these in their games. |
Summer Term | Binary bits and bobs: Students will study binary code and gain an understanding of how it works. Students will also learn ASCII code and learn how to count, write words, and create coloured images in binary Designing a Computer Game: Using their knowledge from the year, students will be able to develop a game of their own. They will work through each of the important elements of a game and the create it in a software of their choice. |
iDea - The Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award This is an international programme that helps students develop digital, enterprise and employability skills. As an extension to each of the units studied, students will get the opportunity to work through a series of online challenges. Through the completion of the topics, the students will then win badges, on a range of different topics. When students have completed a number of the badges, they will become eligible for certificate which are awarded at Bronze, Silver and Gold level and are sent through from Buckingham Palace. |
