Year 9

Subject: English

 Autumn

 During the first half of the Autumn term students will study either a novel/Non-Fiction/or Poetry. In the Novel unit, they will develop the skill of recognising how the author conveys meaning. The main assessment task for the Novel unit will be a reflective essay using PBD, to show their understanding. In the Non-Fiction unit, they will learn about how social issues are addressed by the music industry. The main assessment task(s) for the Non-Fiction unit will be to plan, write and design a magazine article aimed at teenagers, in which they discuss how and why the music industry addresses so many social issues. For the Poetry, they will study a selection of Love poems and develop the skill of analysing a poem for meaning, specifically focusing on how language is used. For this Poetry unit, the main assessment task will be to write a GCSE style response to a question under controlled writing conditions. During the second half of this term students will study either Poetry/Non-Fiction/or Shakespeare. For the Shakespeare unit, they will learn to consider stagecraft, and how it relates to meaning. For this unit, the main assessment task will be a group presentation about staging eg the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet.

Students will spend the first half of the Summer term preparing for the end of term examination in English.
During the second half of the Summer term students will study Monologues. In the Monologue unit, they will study monologues and consider the challenges of writing and performing one. The main assessment task for the Monologue unit will be to write and deliver their own monologue.
