Year 7

Subject: Geography

 Autumn

Unit 1: Geographical skills
During this unit students will study a variety of basic geographical skills. This will include how to read an Ordnance Survey map, how to work out 4 and 6 figure grid references and how to use symbols and contours lines. Students will also be completing sketch maps and interpreting photographs.
The main assessment task will test students map reading skills.

Unit 2: Restless Earth
During this unit students will study volcanoes.
The main assessment task is a case study on the eruption of Mount St Helens in the USA in May 1980.

 Spring

Unit 3: Exploring Settlements
During this unit students will study the basic principles of settlement growth and land use patterns. They will also explore shopping patterns, such as changes since 1950’s and the growth of large out of town shopping centres and use of the Internet.
The main assessment task(s) will be a written test based on knowledge and understanding of the topic.

 Summer

Unit 4: Wherein the UK and Europe?
During this unit students will study the physical and human geography of the UK and Europe.
The main assessment task(s) will be in the form of a country based study.

Unit 5: Exploring our local Environment
During this Unit students will explore the Island within which they live. This will include Parish characteristics and environmental issues affecting the Island. This will coincide with Environment Week visits to Bellozane waste management sites.

*Note: There is some flexibility between units depending on whether classes have one to two lessons per week on the rotation.
