Year 11 

Subject: English

 Autumn

 

This term students will focus on Language Unit 3: Spoken Language Study.
In the Spoken Language Study students will:
• understand the importance of context, such as regional and cultural variation, age groups, situation, place and time
• understand the use of standard and non-standard English
• analyse commonly occurring features of characteristics of spoken language

 

When writing for the Spoken Voice students will:
• experiment through short writing activities in preparation for creating a text of their own

There are 2 controlled assessments for Unit 3; one to be completed the week before half-term, the other the first week of December.

 

 Spring

 Students will study a prose novel such as ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ by R L Stevenson. This is in preparation for the Literature examination.
In the second half of the term students will study poems from the Poetry Anthology. They will develop and practise independent responses to poems focusing on:
• voice, tone and mood
• imagery
• language choice
• rhyme and rhythm
• form and structure

This is in preparation for the Literature examination.

 Summer

The main focus is revision for the examinations in English Language and Literature. Students will have timed essays to complete in examination conditions in class. Students will need to re-read their cultural and prose novels, in addition to revising the 15 poems studied in class.
