Design Technology

Autumn TermDuring this term, students undertake a number of focused practical skills tasks to develop their understanding and ability to apply some more advanced techniques in a range of materials. This will help prepare students for the exam.

They will also undertake a trial module based on the “Introduction to Designing and Making” unit from the GCSE syllabus to prepare them for the Controlled Assignments later in the course. This will involved designing and making a prototype of a trophy to award for House competitions.

Alongside the above they will complete tasks investigating “Sustainable Design” to develop understanding required for the exam on this area. This exam covers:

- Consideration of products
- Consideration of the environment
- Consideration of society and the economy

Spring TermDuring the Spring and Summer term, students will focus on their first controlled assignment for the “Introduction to Designing and Making” unit. This unit covers:

- Developing research and investigation skills
- Developing drawing skills
- Modelling
- Evaluating processes

- They have 20 hours to complete the unit.
- The product brief must be chosen to fit within the themes set by the exam board.
 

Summer TermAs per Spring term.
