Curriculum

At Grainville School the curriculum is divided into Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) aged 11-14 and Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) aged 15-16.

The KS3 curriculum builds upon a child’s primary education and prepares the foundations for GCSE courses at KS4. At the end of Year 9 students select a number of option choices to study alongside core subjects at KS4. Some students may take examinations early due to their ability. All students follow a common timetable at KS3 (Y7-9).

The curriculum is designed to be appropriate to the needs of individuals and balanced so as to provide the best foundation for employment or for post 16 education.

Examinations:

Most subjects follow GCSE courses with the possibility of an Entry-level Certificate for those students who do not reach the minimum standard for GCSE.

Some subjects have tiered examinations limiting the maximum and minimum grades. The tier a student is entered for is determined by their attainment in that subject.

The decision is taken in the spring term of Year 11. Most subjects have coursework or practical assignments. Students can attain up to 13 GCSE grades, though most will take less than this figure.

Core subjects entitlement for all students:

  • English (Language and Literature)
